Soy - One of Nature's Perfect Foods

In our quest to be healthy and active, we’re always on the lookout for new sources of excellent nutrition. While many of you may be familiar with the health claims associated with soy products, knowing more details may help you to make an important choice for your long-term health.
Soy beans are considered “complete proteins”, as they contain significant amounts of all the amino acids needed that cannot be synthesized in the body. On nutritional measures recognized by the FDA, the USDA and the National Academy of Sciences, the protein quality of soy concentrate exceeds that of beef, with a score of .99 versus .92!
Additionally, soy products are generally considered to be highly digestible, which means the nutrients they contain are more easily absorbed by the body, and thus better utilized. Consumption of protein-rich soy can help you to satisfy the current Recommended Dietary Allowance of protein, which is approximately 63 grams for males and 50 grams for females (for most adults).
It is widely known that in countries where consumption of soybeans is higher than in the U.S., rates of cardiovascular disease are lower. Researchers have indicated that the isoflavones contained in soybeans are primarily responsible for these improved rates of health. In 1999, the FDA approved the health claim regarding the protective effects of soy protein against coronary heart disease. Additionally, the American Heart Association has recommended the use of soy protein to help people reduce high cholesterol levels.
There is ample research linking the consumption of soy with increasing the flexibility of arterial walls, protection against the growth of some cancerous tumors (like breast, prostate, colon and uterine), lowering blood pressure and triglyceride levels, reducing the negative effects of LDL (low density lipoproteins), protection against the bone loss associated with post-menopausal-aged women, as well as the alleviation of menopausal symptoms.
In the coming months, we’ll be providing more reviews of research in this exciting area of nutritional supplementation. Look for further details soon!
